The Ombudswoman has been designated as one of the bodies responsible for the protection of fundamental rights in accordance with the Artificial Intelligence Regulation. The Regulation entered into force on 1 August 2024 as the first EU legal framework for the use of artificial intelligence, setting out minimum rules that Member States, including Croatia, must implement.

The Regulation stipulates (Art. 77) that the competent authorities are authorised, among other things, to request and access any documentation created or maintained under the Regulation in an accessible language and format, when such access is necessary for the effective fulfilment of their mandates within the limits of their jurisdiction.

Following the entry into force of the Regulation, the Ministry of Justice, Public Administration and Digital Transformation, in line with its obligations, submitted to the European Commission a list of competent authorities pursuant to the Regulation.

In addition to the Ombudswoman, the Republic of Croatia has designated the Ombudsperson for Children, the Ombudsperson for Gender Equality, the Ombudsperson for Persons with Disabilities, the Personal Data Protection Agency, the State Electoral Commission and the Electronic Media Agency as bodies competent for the protection of fundamental rights in accordance with the Regulation.
