What discrimination is, how to recognize it, what the grounds for discrimination are and how many there are, who can discriminate, and which groups are most exposed to it and in which areas it is most prevalent — these were some of the topics Ombudswoman Tena Šimonović Einwalter presented to students at the Faculty of Economics and Tourism “Dr. Mijo Mirković” of Juraj Dobrila University in Pula on Tuesday, 30 April 2024.
At the start of the lecture, Ombudswoman Šimonović Einwalter gave a brief overview of how the Office of the Ombudswoman operates, focusing particularly on the mandate of the central body for combating discrimination. She also explained the importance of the principles of equality and non-discrimination in the context of protecting human rights.
Given the high level of interest shown in the topic, Ombudswoman Šimonović Einwalter explained the concept of discrimination and the basics of combating discrimination, with the students showing particular interest in the real-life examples she provided.
Since the lecture was attended by students of economics and tourism, a significant portion was dedicated to forms of discrimination in the fields of employment and access to goods and services — particularly relevant given the role of non-discrimination in tourism and the tourism industry — citing numerous examples to illustrate these issues.
