Anica Tom\u0161i\u0107, Adviser to the Ombudswoman and a member of the National Preventive Mechanism for the Prevention of Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (NPM), has been re-elected as a member of the UN Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (SPT) for the 2027\u20132030 term.<\/p>\n
The UN Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture, comprising 25 independent experts from different countries, monitors conditions of detention and the treatment of persons deprived of their liberty. It also advises and assists States in implementing the Optional Protocol to the Convention against Torture (OPCAT) to prevent torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment.<\/p>\n
Alongside Adviser Tom\u0161i\u0107, experts from Montenegro, Chile, Ghana, Greece, Latvia, Lebanon, Hungary, Moldova, Peru, Togo, Ukraine and Uruguay were also elected as members of the SPT.<\/p>\n
The institution of the Ombudswoman has performed the functions of the NPM since 2012, with the aim of strengthening protection against and preventing torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment. It carries out this preventive work through regular, unannounced visits to places where persons deprived of their liberty or whose freedom of movement is restricted are or may be held.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
